Simply Fashions
Simply Fashions is a discount women's clothing retailer based in Birmingham. The company sells most items for under $15 and targets African-American customers. It operates about 285 stores in 22 states, and is also the parent of Fashion Trend chain. The company's offices are located at 2500 Crestwood Boulevard.
Founded as Simply $6 in 1987 under the Bargain Town USA division of Montgomery's Enstar, Inc, the chain was purchased out of bankruptcy by the sons of Bargain Town USA founder Mervyn Barstein, Mark and Rodney in 1991. Mark handles the merchandising while Rodney manages operations.
In 2008 the company was named as the defendent in a federal lawsuit alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Sometimes simple is best. Simply Fashion Stores sells ladies' apparel and accessories through some 285 Simply Fashions and Fashion Trend shops that cater to African American women (ages 20 to 35) in 20-plus states in the southern and central US. Simply Fashion is owned and run by brothers Rodney and Mark Barstein, who brought the retail chain out of bankruptcy after purchasing it (then operating as Simply 6) in 1991. In addition to the company's name change and market transitioning (going from its model of a $6-and-under price tag to selling garments and related accessories priced generally under $30), the Barsteins shut down unprofitable stores and opened new locations in higher-traffic areas.
